Today, I announce the appointment of Dr Kathleen Gleeson as the Deputy Electoral Commissioner at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) for a period of five years.

Dr Gleeson has been acting in the position since 2024, overseeing the 2025 election, and playing a critical role in delivering the AEC’s strategic priorities, including overseeing complex and sensitive programs and supporting the agency’s governance and integrity.

Dr Gleeson’s significant experience within the AEC also includes, since 2021, serving as First Assistant Commissioner, Service Delivery Group, leading the delivery of federal electoral events as the AEC’s National Election Manager. Prior to this, Dr Gleeson served as the AEC Assistant Commissioner, Delivery and Support Branch, and as Director of Operations for Victoria.

Dr Gleeson’s appointment provides continuity of leadership and draws on her deep, practical experience delivering multiple electoral events. Together with Australian Electoral Commissioner, Mr Jeff Pope PSM, Dr Gleeson will now lead preparations for the next Federal Election and implementation of the electoral reforms passed last term.

I thank Dr Gleeson for her work as Acting Deputy Commissioner and congratulate her on her appointment to the role permanently.
