Special Minister of State

Appointment of new Australian Electoral Commissioner

SENATOR THE HON DON FARRELL
Minister for Trade and Tourism
Special Minister of State

Date

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Jeffrey Pope APM GAICD as the Electoral Commissioner, Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), for a period of five years.

Mr Pope has been acting in the position since December 2024, during which time he oversaw the largest federal election in our history, earlier this year.

Mr Pope’s experience includes eight years as the Deputy Electoral Commissioner of the AEC and as the AEC’s Victorian State Manger prior to that.

Mr Pope has overseen five federal elections, one federal referendum, 18 by-elections (including the 2018 ‘Super Saturday’ by-elections), many special Senate counts, countless industrial elections, and implemented several major pieces of legislative reform.

With years of service at the AEC, there is no one better suited to oversee the work of the AEC, conduct of federal elections, and safeguard the integrity of one of Australia's most respected and trusted institutions.

I acknowledge the successful 11-year term of former Electoral Commissioner Mr Tom Rogers, who leaves a legacy of stable leadership and a stronger democracy.
