SENATOR THE HON DON FARRELL
Minister for Trade and Tourism
Special Minister of State
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Jeffrey Pope APM GAICD as the acting Electoral Commissioner, Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), from 15 December 2024.
The Electoral Commissioner is a vital part of Australia’s democracy, overseeing the work of the AEC and the conduct of federal elections.
Mr Pope is highly regarded and since 2016 has been the AEC’s Deputy Electoral Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer. In these roles, he made significant contribution to the delivery of recent federal elections and the 2023 referendum.
Mr Pope’s experience will ensure consistency and continuity in the conduct of electoral events ahead of the next federal election.
This appointment marks the end of a successful 11-year term for the current Electoral Commissioner, Mr Tom Rogers.
On behalf of the Parliament and all Australians, I thank Mr Rogers for his work in leading the delivery of the 2016, 2019 and 2022 federal elections, and the 2023 referendum.
Mr Rogers has managed significant reforms to modernise Australia’s electoral system and safeguard the integrity of one of Australia's most respected and trusted institutions.
Mr Rogers leaves a legacy of stable leadership and a stronger democracy.
