Australia has been recognised as one of the world’s leading digital governments, climbing to second place globally in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) 2025 Digital Government Index .
This result reflects the Albanese Government’s focus on improving digital services as a way of improving services for Australians. Continued investment in modern, secure and user-focused digital services make it easier for Australians and businesses to interact with government.
Australia improved its ranking from fifth place in 2023, with the OECD highlighting the strength of Australia’s digital service delivery, national coordination and focus on designing services around people’s needs.
The OECD recognised Australia’s leadership in several key areas, including:
- Using digital tools to simplify engagement with government services
- Prioritising projects that deliver practical release value
- Collaborating across government to deliver a national approach to service design
- Strengthening the security and resilience of digital public infrastructure
Australia ranked:
- 1st for “digital by design”, reflecting the Government’s commitment to making digital the default way to access services where appropriate
- 1st for “user-driven” services, demonstrating a strong focus on people’s needs and experiences
- 4th for “government as a platform”, supporting public servants with shared digital capabilities
- 5th for “proactive government”, recognising improvements in anticipating and responding to community needs
These results reflect the Government’s ongoing work to modernise service delivery through the Data and Digital Government Strategy Implementation Plan 2025, supported by the Digital Transformation Agency.
The Government is continuing to build on this progress through initiatives including:
- Delivering the AI Plan for the Australian Public Service
- Strengthening data capability through the Australian Government Data Governance Framework and the Data Maturity Assessment Tool
- Expanding connected services through the APS Experience Design Principles
Together, these reforms are helping to build a more capable, responsive and secure digital government that delivers better services for Australians.
