The Morrison Government will support greater recognition of Western Australia’s 50,000 year cultural history, and the development of collaborative environmental management, through the establishment of the Harry Butler Environmental Education Centre at the Murdoch University campus in Perth.
A $25 million grant has been finalised with Murdoch University which will see the centre form a gateway to the 3400-hectare Beeliar Regional Park wetland environment, fulfilling an election commitment to recognise one of Australia’s pioneering environmental advocates.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said Harry Butler’s legacy in environmental protection, biosecurity and environmental management would provide a fitting inspiration for education, research and the appreciation of the nation’s unique cultural history.
“Harry was a great communicator who gave millions of Australians an insight into our rich natural heritage and the Harry Butler Environmental Education Centre will build on his efforts to promote sustainability and environmental management,” Minister Ley said.
“The centre will provide a platform for the community, industry and academics to collaborate and develop practical environmental management solutions, while promoting quality teaching, learning and research.
WA Senator Mathias Cormann expressed strong support for the centre, highlighting the role it will play in positioning Western Australia at the forefront of academic excellence well into the future.
“The Harry Butler Environmental Education Centre will provide new academic pathways for students and support research programs that promote development while ensuring environmental protection, and it will also promote high quality teaching, learning and research in the coexistence of business and biodiversity,” Senator Cormann said.
“I am delighted that the Morrison Government can support the shaping of the next generation of leaders in this field.”
