Even the unions say Roe 8 must be built

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE

Senator the Hon. Mathias Cormann
Minister for Finance
Leader of the Government in the Senate
Senator for Western Australia

The Hon. Alan Tudge MP
Minister for Population, Cities and urban Infrastructure

The Transport Workers Union has seen the light and broken ranks with the McGowan Labor Government by backing in the much-needed Roe 8 & 9 Perth Freight Link.

WA’s TWU State Secretary Tim Dawson has sensibly made the point in today’s West Australian:

“I agree with the need to build the (Perth Freight Link) because it is what our members want.”

In a reckless, irresponsible and short-sighted decision after the 2017 State election the WA State Labor Government stopped plans to build this critically important piece of transport infrastructure.

It is clear that the TWU knows the project must go ahead.

We call on all WA Labor MPs State and Federal to join in with the TWU and back this project in.

Federal and WA Labor need to get their heads out of the sand and back the Perth Freight Link.

We have $1.2 billion on the table, ready to go. We want to see Roe 8 and Roe 9 built as quickly as possible.

The Perth Freight Link will not only bust congestion, but will dramatically improve safety.

It will reduce the cost of moving freight across Perth to Fremantle Port, reduce emissions and significantly improve amenity across south metropolitan Perth.

Roe 8 will extend Roe Highway as a dedicated freight route and take close to 7000 heavy vehicles a day off suburban roads in Perth’s south.

Roe 9 will be a 5.7km tunnel from Hilton to East Fremantle and reduce traffic volumes even further.

It will mean a safer trip for truckies, it will free up major roads and will help the people of Perth to get home sooner and safer.
