The Government has released the Indigenous Procurement Policy guidelines, further renewing the Government’s commitment to closing the gap on Indigenous employment. 

The Indigenous Procurement Policy guidelines will commit the Government for the first time to an Indigenous businesses purchasing target and provide significant benefits for Indigenous businesses.

“Through governments working more closely with Indigenous businesses, we will be able to provide the jobs, skills and training to get more First Australians into meaningful employment,” Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion said. 

“Indigenous businesses are around 100 times more likely to employ an Indigenous person and overwhelmingly, Indigenous businesses are small businesses. This policy is about creating opportunities for these Indigenous small businesses to flourish and grow.”

The target of 3 per cent of Commonwealth contracts awarded to Indigenous businesses by 2020 was ambitious but the Government is serious about achieving it. 

“Each year, the Government purchases goods and services worth billions of dollars. This policy seeks to harness that purchasing power to drive real change for Indigenous organisations and people,” Minister for Finance Mathias Cormann said.  

“Whether through direct contracts or as part of the supply chain of some of Australia’s biggest companies, this policy will ensure that Indigenous businesses are showcasing the products they have to offer.”

“This policy is an important step in achieving the Government’s vision for a vibrant and diverse Indigenous business sector.” 

The Indigenous Procurement Policy guidelines applies from 1 July 2015.
