Labor Continues to Mislead WA Voters on the Carbon Tax

Senator the Hon. Mathias Cormann
Minister for Finance

Date

On the very day Labor voted against scrapping the carbon tax, their lead Senate candidate in Western Australia asserts in The West Australian that “Labor IS scrapping the carbon tax”.

Under Julia Gillard, Labor promised the Australian people that there would be 'no carbon tax' before an election and then did the exact opposite after the election.

Under Bill Shorten, Labor doesn't even wait for the election to break their promises.

Today Labor declares in Western Australia that it "is scrapping the carbon tax" only to vote against scrapping the carbon tax in Canberra - within hours and on the same day.

This is just unbelievable.

Let’s remind ourselves how often Labor has broken their 'no carbon tax' promises before:

  • In August 2010, Julia Gillard promised, that “there will be no carbon tax under a government I lead” (Ch.10 – 16 August 2010), only to announce one straight after the election;
  • In August 2013, Senator Louise Pratt proclaimed that “Kevin Rudd and Labor have removed the carbon tax” (Pratt election flyer – August 2013), only to vote to keep the carbon tax after the election.
  • On 20 March 2014, Labor's Lead Senate candidate Joe Bullock proudly declares that “Labor is scrapping the carbon tax”, (The West Australian – 20 March 2014), literally while his Labor colleagues in Canberra are voting to keep it.

Labor cannot be trusted on the carbon tax.

Only the Abbott Government is consistent and steadfast in our commitment to scrap this anti–WA tax.
